Hoop With Swifts
These swift birds were made with a 3D Pen and lutradur fabric. The black filament used in this piece has been made from recycled plastics. If you're not sure what a 3D pen is then I'll let AI explain.
"A 3D pen is a hand-held device that melts and extrudes plastic filament, similar to a hot glue gun, to create three-dimensional objects by drawing lines in the air or on a surface. The plastic rapidly cools and solidifies, allowing users to draw freehand, build structures, or repair existing 3D prints. 3D pens offer a portable, more affordable, and less complex alternative to traditional 3D printers, making them popular with artists, hobbyists, and children."
I roughly paint the lutradur fabric before I draw the curlews with the pen. I draw with PLA filament on both sides to add strength. I then sew around the edges to make sure the plastic doesn't peel away from the fabric. (The PLA does have some give but the beaks and wings would snap if not handled with care).
When the birds are complete, they're attached to the metal hoop with thin black wire.
